A few days ago, a friend handed me a piece of white Toblerone chocolate – something I’ve not eaten in many years.

It triggered a surprising mental response for me – it tasted exactly like a “Milky Way” bar, of the sort I used to eat when I was an 8 year old.

It mentally transported me back to me as a child, wearing cowboy boots and sporting a pop gun, and eating those bars.

Its amazing what a long-forgotten smell or taste can do, in terms of bringing you back to another place, and another time.

The brain is an amazing thing. However it works, its very clearly ‘associative’.
